Old Microsoft patent details gaming console with DVR functionality ...

Can you imagine the original Xbox 360, with its 20GB hard drive, being used as a DVR? We really can't see it working, but in January of 2007 Microsoft was down with the idea.

Patents discovered by Tom's Guide detail plans for a gaming console similar to the Xbox 360 with a "digital video recorder (DVR) application running alongside a television client component." In the alternate reality where Microsoft actually followed through with this patent, the console in question would be able to directly record content even when playing games or if "the gaming console is turned off."

Of course today the Xbox 360 can stream content in a number of ways, but does not allow for direct recording to the hard drive. Now that the ceiling for storage has been raised on the platform we'd be on board with such functionality, but if this languishing patent is any indication Microsoft is fine with the current state of things.

FCC concerned about Verizon?s $2 convenience fee, looking into the matter

FCC

The FCC, who has surprisingly been all up in every carriers business as of late has now spoken about Verizon's $2 convenience fee that will go into effect as of January 15th.

“On behalf of American consumers, we’re concerned about Verizon’s actions and are looking into the matter,”

What, exactly that means in anyone's guess -- but given other carriers have been charging such things for years now, we'll just have to wait and see what they have to say about Verizon now starting it up. In the meantime, enjoy this soundbite.

Norton Requests Union Station Redevelopment Audit

District of Columbia Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton has called for a federal audit of the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation (USRC), citing the need for a "definitive audit of [USRC's] financial viability and management" as plans for the station's renovation continue.?

"Assessing the financial condition of this asset is necessary ... to avoid another cycle of the disrepair that once led to the shutdown of the facility,"Norton wrote in a letter sent jointly to the Department of Transportation with West Virginia Rep. Nick Rahall.

The letter requests clarification on a number of issues related to the ongoing renovation of Union Station, including USRC's lease of the station's retail space to Askenazy Acquisition Corporation.

"Because this lease is the primary means of support for USRC, it will be important to know whether the terms meet the long-term needs of USRC and allow it to be self-sustaining," Norton and Rahall wrote.

The letter also touched on the issue of a purpose-built bus terminal. Current renovation plans call for the construction of a bus deck in the station's parking garage. The letter noted that five intercity bus companies currently operate out of Union Station, but "the use of the existing bus deck is not a permanent solution and long-term plans for full intercity bus service have not yet been developed."

USRC was formed in 1983 after Congress passed the Union Station Redevelopment Act. That act authorized the Department of Transportation to form a non-profit corporation to guide the renovation and redevelopment of the station, which had fallen into disrepair over the preceding decades.

In addition to the construction of a bus deck and rehabilitation of the station's retail space, redevelopment plans call for the expansion of Amtrak waiting areas, expansion of MARC and VRE services, expanded access to the Union Station Metro station, renovation of Columbus Circle, expansion of the station's concourse, and the construction of a three-million-square-foot mixed-use development named Burnham Place after the station's architect, Daniel Burnham. That development would be located over the Union Station rail yard.

Does Microsoft Really Need A Windows Superphone?

By Chris Velazco

A leaked Windows Phone roadmap made the rounds earlier today, and if its contents hold true, then Microsoft (MSFT) will be going big on hardware when it comes time for Windows Phone Apollo to take the stage. Even though the budget-friendly Tango update will hit devices first, Microsoft has apparently made the development of ?superphones? a priority for next year.

One of the things that I really enjoy about Windows Phone is that it doesn?t need the latest-and-greatest hardware in order to give users a consistently smooth experience. Take devices like the Focus Flash for example ? AT&T (T) will give you one for something like a penny these days, and I?d say the device runs about as well as any other Windows Phone on the market. That?s a good thing ? creating a sense of consistency across devices at all price points means that nearly every user has the same (hopefully solid) experience.

By the same token, it also creates a problem of differentiation. When the experience of using the OS is very close across different devices, hardware manufacturers have to find ways to make their handset the one to buy. Whether that?s by going with a big display or a physical keyboard is up to the vendors to decide, but Microsoft?s supposed push for ?superphones? with the Apollo update may mean that Microsoft will try and face Android on their own terms.

That?s where Microsoft falls into a trap, and I can?t really blame them.

Companies like Samsung and Motorola have taken their OS of choice and have thrown it on devices for every potential market they can think of. Meanwhile, blogs and pundits like to wax technical everytime a new spec sheet is released, which creates a sense of unwarranted hype around numbers and clock speeds and megapixels. The end result is an environment that?s overloaded with options, with only the best performing ones receiving any limelight.

That?s not to say a device?s specs aren?t important. In fact, they?re absolutely important to the extent that they help deliver a great user experience. After a while though, the law of diminishing returns kicks in ? adding a slightly faster processor makes a device look better on paper, but actual performance gains could be negligible.

But Windows Phone has arguably made it to that point already. Sure, it could stand a few tweaks, but I don?t think what Windows Phone needs can be addressed by new hardware. Not yet. anyway. The limiting factor is the OS itself. It runs very well even on first-generation hardware, so would beefing up components make that much of a difference?

The concept of a superphone, with whatever specifics that may entail, hinges on the notion that it can deliver more than what a run-of-the-mill device is capable of. Dual-core processors and LTE radios would be welcome additions to the platform?s hardware lineup, and I?m sure they?ll appear in Windows Phones soon anyway, but hardware additions at best will only lead to feature parity with the competition. It all comes down to how big a step forward the Apollo update is.

It was long rumored that the ?Apollo? codename referred to Windows Phone 8, and it?s apparent ship date in Q4 2012 means that a lot could happen between now and then. If some drastic changes take place, then the superphone concept may be better able to deliver a WP8 experience than current hardware.

But will it be enough to solidify their presence in the market? If the road map is legit (and hasn?t been made irrelevant), then waiting until Q4 2012 for their first superphones hit the market could put them at a terrible disadvantage against Android?s quick updates and Apple?s end-of-the-year marketing power. It?s bound to be a pretty gruesome fight no matter what developments arise between now and then, and Microsoft had better hope that their approach pays off.

Congress frees $40 million in aid to Palestinians (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Lawmakers have freed up a little more than 20 percent of $187 million in U.S. assistance to the Palestinians that had been frozen over the Palestinian bid for U.N. membership.

Members of Congress have made available $40 million in economic and humanitarian funding for the Palestinians, the State Department said Wednesday. The money is administered by the U.S. Agency for International Development and "has been vital to establishing and strengthening the foundations necessary for a future Palestinian state," the department said.

The Obama administration had been urging lawmakers, with Israel's backing, to release the money as it contributes to Palestinian stability and Israeli security. "It is in the interest of the Palestinians, Israel and the United States, to ensure these efforts continue," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said. "They help to build a more democratic, stable, and secure region."

The administration is pressing Congress to release the remaining $147 million that comes from the last budget cycle in which aid to the Palestinians was to total 545.7 million. New funding for the Palestinians will be subject to additional scrutiny and can be blocked if they win full admission to the United Nations before a peace deal with Israel is agreed.

The administration has asked Congress for $513.4 million in aid for the Palestinians in fiscal year 2012.

Syrian troops kill 3 Lebanese in border incident

Lebanese security officials say Syrian troops opened fire at a car that crossed illegally into northern Lebanon, killing three Lebanese men.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

The shooting came late Tuesday as Arab League observers started a mission in Syria aimed at stopping nine months of bloody clashes during an uprising against the regime.

Some Syrians have fled to Lebanon to escape the fighting, and Syria has complained that weapons are smuggled across its borders. It was not immediately clear if the shooting was related to the uprising in Syria.

Such incidents are not uncommon on the border, since many Lebanese and Syrians cross the border illegally. Several Syrians and Lebanese were killed or wounded in recent border incidents.

Rare white Christmas graces Texas panhandle (Reuters)

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) ? A light dusting of snow in north Texas delivered a rare white Christmas to this drought-stricken state, but the majority of the nation was seeing mild weather on Sunday.

Snow showers glazed parts of the Northeast as well, with snowy road conditions cited as a factor in a two-vehicle traffic collision that left four men dead in the town of Palermo, Maine, on Sunday.

But weather forecasters said 99 percent of Americans would see more green and brown for their Yuletide celebrations -- along with plenty of rain, according to Accuweather.com.

Other fair-weather exceptions included freeze warnings posted in the farm-rich Central Valley of California, gale warnings near the Great Lakes, and high winds that left thousands of homes without power in and around Seattle.

The wet Christmas in the Texas panhandle and Permian Basin brought some cheer for drought-weary Texans, who were seeing snow in Lubbock and Amarillo on Christmas morning and rain in the eastern part of the state.

The worst drought on record in Texas this year stoked devastating wildfires, killed as many as half a billion trees, and prompted the most serious urban water-use restrictions ever in the state.

By mid-afternoon on Sunday, at least 4 inches of snow had fallen in Amarillo, making it the second snowiest Christmas in that city's history, National Weather Service forecaster Stephen Bilodeau said.

And with winter weather advisories in effect until 6 a.m. on Monday, there was a chance that Amarillo's record for snow accumulation might be broken before midnight.

Bilodeau said he would have preferred that the snow quit early and left the afternoon safer for Christmas Day travel.

"It's a little bit too much," he said. "The white Christmas through the beginning of the day was good, but now these poor people are getting out into this stuff. There have been a few accidents, and it's ruining a few people's day today."

Not so for native Texan and conservationist Don Alexander, 55, who was spending the holiday with his wife's family in Midland, and enjoying his very first white Christmas.

"The snow is a nifty bonus," Alexander said, as his college-aged daughter posted snow pictures on her Facebook page. "The snow will certainly make this particular Christmas memorable. Winter isn't very scenic in West Texas, so the layer of snow is a nice effect. The bad part is having to wipe down the dog's paws every time he goes outside and then back in."

Far to the north, public safety officials in Maine said four men were killed in a head-on crash between an SUV and another vehicle on a road made slippery by light snowfall in Palermo, about 60 miles northeast of Portland. Police said the collision ranks as Maine's deadliest traffic wreck this year.

In the Midwest, a lack of snow was especially welcome news in Minneapolis, where a pre-Christmas storm last year dumped 17 inches of snow, causing the roof of the Metrodome, the Minnesota Viking's football stadium, to collapse.

This year, Minneapolis was without snow and basking in temperatures that climbed into the relatively balmy high-30s over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Very little fresh snow was expected to fall elsewhere throughout the day on Sunday, according to Accuweather.com. But a storm in southern Ontario was forecast to move into Quebec on Sunday night and drop snow near the Great Lakes, with some accumulation expected overnight.

Residents from Watertown, New York, to Bangor, Maine -- many of whom are off work on Monday in observance of the Christmas holiday -- could wake up to an inch of snow on the ground Monday as that storm moves East.

The Weather Service posted a wind advisory for western Washington state on Sunday, warning of gusts reaching 50 miles per hour through mid-afternoon.

Utility companies reported at least 24,000 homes and businesses without electricity in Seattle and the greater Puget Sound region during the day, mostly from tree limbs blown into power lines.

Most of the Pacific Northwest was experiencing mild weather on Christmas Day, while states like Colorado and New Mexico had lingering snow leftover from a pre-Christmas storm.

LG's 55-inch 'world's largest' OLED HDTV panel is official, coming to CES 2012

We only have a few more days left until the festivities truly kick off at CES 2012 in Las Vegas, but LG has already tipped its hand with a press release promising the "world's largest" OLED panel for the show. We've seen smaller screens from LG before and it had already promised a 55-inch OLED HDTV for mid-2012, so this news is just another sign the company is ready to take its technology mainstream. LG's tech uses white OLEDs overlaid with colors, which it claims makes for a lower error rate and clearer "ultra definition" screen, with more colors than standard LCDs. Check after the break for one more promo pic of LG's super skinny 5mm prototype, we'll get a better look at it (and the inevitable competition from Korean rival Samsung) at the company's booth January 9th.

Melanie Amaro wins first U.S. season of "X Factor" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? An emotional Melanie Amaro won the TV singing contest "The X Factor" on Thursday, earning a $5 million recording contract and closing the first U.S. season of the heavily hyped Fox show.

Josh Krajcik finished second after a public vote and Chris Rene came in third after a Christmas-themed, two-hour finale that also saw performances by Justin Bieber, Stevie Wonder, Leona Lewis and 50 Cent.

Amaro, 19, a ballad singer whose voice has drawn comparisons to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, had been tipped by the four judges to win after delivering a powerful rendition of Beyonce's hit "Listen" in Wednesday's live show.

On Thursday, she dropped to her knees in prayer and wept with joy, speechless at her victory.

More than 100,000 people auditioned for a chance to compete in "The X Factor," which judge and entrepreneur Simon Cowell brought to American television after making it the most-watched show in his native Britain.

But the U.S. show has fallen short of the ratings and critical expectations set up by Cowell this year. It has drawn an average of 12 million viewers or about half the audience for long-running singing contest "American Idol" that is also on Fox.

Amaro gets a $5 million contract with Cowell's Sony Music-owned record label SyCo and a starring role in a new commercial from sponsor Pepsi.

"We came here to find a superstar and we found a superstar," said a delighted Cowell after Amaro won the contest.

Krajcik, 30, a bluesy rock singer who worked in a burrito restaurant before joining the show, also congratulated Amaro.

"Melanie deserves it. She has a wonderful voice. I have had such an incredible experience. I got to be myself and sing what I wanted to sing. I couldn't be happier," Krajcik said.

Rene, 28, a recovering drug addict and rapper whose original song "Young Homies" has been a YouTube hit, was eliminated at the halfway point of Thursday's live show.

All three contestants had performed two songs apiece on Wednesday. Host Steve Jones did not reveal the number of votes cast by the public by phone, text message, Twitter and online.

"I feel amazing that I got to do this, that I am here," Rene said. "I got to touch a lot of people's hearts out here."

"The X Factor" will return for a second U.S. season in the fall of 2012.

The Best American Poetry 2011

This collection of 2011 poetry offers both consolation and honest assessment in the face of a difficult year.?

As the year draws to a close, many Americans will watch year-end reviews and assess where they and the country stand. The Best American Poetry 2011 provides a slower, more in-depth look at our difficult economic times. Yet as guest editor Kevin Young suggests in his preface, the poems are not just ?pieces of time,? they are evidence that ?poetry, our most lamented yet longest standing of the arts, has hit back ? often by taking the recession head on.?

In some poems, ?hitting back? means tackling timely subjects, such as technology, the financial world, or blatant materialism. More often, the writing explores the constant unease and insecurity many Americans feel these days. In ?Valediction,? the second poem, Sherman Alexie gives voice to both private and public concerns in these opening lines:

I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
That I could not have convinced you of this,
?
But these dark times are just like those dark times.
Yes, my sad acquaintance, each dark time is
?
Indistinguishable from the other dark times.
Yesterday is as relentless as tomorrow.
?
The poem ends, five couplets later, with: ?You were a stranger. You were dark and brief./ And I am humbled by the size of your grief.?

The lingering sense of loss ? which colors so much of the collection ? reflects both the culture and the concept of writer as witness, where poets feel and report on suffering, but they don?t try to offer consolation, because the times themselves don?t provide much comfort.

Instead, readers are propelled through a kaleidoscope of subjects that typify the contemporary American experience: a decadent, meaningless party in New York City, the ever-changing shape of slang, the complex journey of coffee (and some who drink it), the end of intimate relationships, and the fine line between imagination and reality, to name a few. The writing is edgy and sometimes feels like reality TV.

Yet as Young explains, both the edginess and the grief are central, not superfluous: ?For the grieving, the poem is not just a receptacle for private grief ? something that I think marks our elegiac age ? nor is it just a place for mourning, but the birthplace of a private language. How do we write a public poem about private pain, our age asks? How do we make the private language of grief intelligible to others??

As the book progresses, the placement of poems helps make the abiding sense of loss more bearable. Every few pages, a poem offers a bit of humor or warmth, as when Denise Duhamel describes a fantasy strip club that involves putting on winter clothes and Alan Feldman expresses gratitude for his family, home, and ?for never having strayed very far/ into the wide world.? These poems are like islands where readers can rest before diving back into a culture awash in struggle and change.

Yet even the softer moments offer only a brief respite because, as Jennifer Grotz writes in ?Poppies,? sadness touches everything, and

Love is letting the world be half-tamed.

That?s how the rain comes, softly and attentively, then

with unstoppable force?.
?
Most of the writing in "The Best American Poems 2011" is strong, yet readers will likely find themselves asking two questions: ?Do I like these poems?? and ?How much looking back do I need?? For this reviewer, who has had a rough year, the first answer is, ?I admire many of the poems and love several.? The second is, ?I need to move forward.?
?
Sometimes speaking up about injustices ? ?hitting back? as Young would say ? is all we need, or can manage. Yet as 2012 draws closer, the promise of a clean slate and a clean page beckon.
?

Hai There,

I am interested in playing a character for your RP. I am undecided about which side/role to play, but I would be a male character. I just have a little query; I consider myself a literate RPer with a post average of five-hundred words or more. I can dull it down obviously, but I just wanted to know how much you were expecting from players. Word-wise. Not that it really matters, it's just I don't want to be writing too much or too less for the RP itself.

Many Thanks,

Ah i'll just go for the eldest boy in the Everhearts. I would usually go for the 'darker' side but I feel like going for White winged Angels. ^^

I should... have my character up tomorrow. I'm sorry i'm just a little busy at the moment. :) Thank you.

I'd like to play the oldest in the Ravendells, if you could reserve it for me.

Romo sparks Cowboys to big win over Buccaneers (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Tony Romo passed for three touchdowns and scored another as the Dallas Cowboys kept their NFC East title hopes on track with a 31-15 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday.

Quarterback Romo stoked the Cowboys (8-6) to a 28-0 halftime lead as they moved a half-game ahead of the New York Giants in the NFC East.

New York (7-6) can regain a share of the lead with a win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

"It was nice to go out there and play the way we did," Romo told reporters. "Offensively we did a really good job but boy our defense played outstanding ball."

Dallas can claim the NFC East title with wins over Philadelphia and the Giants in the next two weeks.

"It is going to be a good tough battle," Romo said of the January 1 return meeting with the Giants, who edged the Cowboys 37-34 last week. "But we are going to be ready for it."

Two consecutive defeats in which they blew fourth-quarter leads had dropped the Cowboys into a tie with the Giants, but they roared back behind their captain.

Romo hit Miles Austin and Dez Bryant with eight-yard scoring strikes in the first quarter and threw a nine-yard pass to Laurent Robinson for another score in the second.

He helped push the score to 28-0 with a one-yard sneak seconds before halftime.

"I was just throwing the ball, finding the guys open and the guys did the rest," Romo, who finished the game with 23 completions for 249 yards, said of the big first half.

Tampa Bay (4-10), who lost for the eighth consecutive time, finally got on the board after a Romo fumble in the third quarter.

Defensive end Adrian Clayborn sacked Romo, forcing the fumble which linebacker Dekoda Watson scooped up and ran seven yards for a touchdown.

Dallas added a field goal before Josh Freeman led Tampa Bay on a 75-yard drive climaxed by his 13-yard pass to Dezmon Briscoe. Freeman's throw for the two-point conversion made it 31-15 to end the scoring.

The Buccanners' quarterback finished with 17 of 27 passes for 148 yards.

Dallas were playing without top running back DeMarco Murray, who is out for the year with broken ankle, but Felix Jones again filled the void, rushing for 108 yards on 22 carries after gaining 106 yards in the loss to New York.

"He did a great job," Romo said. "We are lucky to have some depth at the tailback position."
