Botnet Lair in Ukraine Demonstrates Dangers of Infection (NewsFactor)

A recently discovered server in Ukraine demonstrates the danger -- and volume -- of industrial-level identity theft. The server, located by the United Kingdom-based security firm Prevx, was a storage site for data stolen from 160,000 computers that had been infected by viruses.

The server remained online for a month after the Internet service provider, and legal authorities, were alerted to its presence. During that time, it continued to steal data from about 5,000 computers daily, which were harvested through the use of viruses that collect and transmit data. A network of such infected computers is known as a botnet.

'Keys to the Castle'

The stolen data found in the server included e-mails, Facebook passwords, Social Security numbers and log-on info for banks. Prevx was able to find and probe the server because of its poor security protection.

Some of the data came from the infected computer of a U.S. community bank, Metro City Bank in Doraville, Ga., which apparently was not well protected. Such lax protection, said Prevx's director of malware research Jacques Erasmus, is like "giving criminals the keys to the castle." Metro City Bank has said that it is notifying customers and looking into the security breach.

Erasmus told news media that getting into a system may not initially result in "the biggest data heist ever," but this is how hackers get into a network, where they can increase their haul. An entry point through a lightly protected computer serves as a beachhead to launch a full-blown invasion.

In addition to relaying data, the botnets can also capture a stream of user activity. For instance, according to the Associated Press, the server in Ukraine had continuing information on a 22-year-old in Southern California, including registration of a domain name with GoDaddy.com, changing of a Yahoo e-mail password, and ordering from Pizza Hut -- along with data used for those transactions, such as his credit card number, birthdate, phone number and other confidential information.

Checking Net Usage

Prevx, which makes anti-botnet protective software, said thousands of PCs are infected every day and become part of botnets -- including computers protected by respected anti-virus and other security suites.

The security firm said that signs of infection include slow performance when doing some minor task, such as checking e-mail or surfing the Web. On a PC, the company recommends, open Task Manager by simultaneously pressing CTRL, ALT, and Delete keys, and then select Network. If the Internet network connection is more than a few percent usage, this could be a sign that extra transmission is going on.

Prevx suggests that the user then obtain a security product from a maker other than your current security suite, since it is obviously not doing a complete job. In addition to its own Prevx Edge, the company suggests products from AVG, Kaspersky, Panda or Sophos. In some cases, professional services may be required to remove the infection.

Security firm Symantec recommends that security software be configured to update automatically, since viruses change frequently. For Windows users, the company suggests that the most recent operating system update be installed, and that browser security settings by increased.

Egypt vote: Highest turnout 'since the pharaohs'

Anticipating a strong presence in the new Egyptian parliament, ultraconservative Islamists outlined plans Friday for a strict brand of religious law, a move that could limit personal freedoms and steer a key U.S. ally toward an Islamic state.

    7. Voters remain cool toward Romney

Egypt's election commission announced only a trickle of results from the first round of of country's first free vote in six decades and said 62 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in the highest turnout in modern history.

However, leaked counts point to a clear majority for Islamist parties at the expense of liberal activist groups that led the uprising against Hosni Mubarak, toppling a regime long seen as a secular bulwark in the Middle East.

The more pragmatic Muslim Brotherhood is poised to take the largest share of votes, as much as 45 percent. But the Nour Party, which espouses a strict interpretation of Islam in which democracy is subordinate to the Quran, could win a quarter of the house, giving it much power to affect debate.

Moderate Islamists have won elections in Tunisia and Morocco in the past two months.

The world is watching the election for pointers to the future in Egypt, the most populous Arab nation and one hitherto seen as a firm U.S. ally committed to preserving its peace treaty with Israel and fighting Islamist militancy.

Abdul Moez Ibrahim, the head of the election committee, joked that the turnout was the highest in any Egyptian election "since the pharaohs." It was even greater than in the "forgeries of the past elections," he added, referring to the Mubarak era.

Story: Islamist parties poised for big win in Egypt

He said 8.3 million of 13.6 million registered voters in areas that voted in the first round had cast their ballots. Other parts of the country will vote in two more rounds, and run-offs must also be held in a six-week election process.

"The blood of martyrs has watered the tree of freedom, social justice and the rule of law. We are now reaping its first fruits," Ibrahim said in tribute to more than 850 people killed in a popular revolt that toppled Mubarak in February.

Protesters were out again in Cairo's Tahrir Square Friday to mourn 42 people killed in the 10 days before the vote at rallies demanding the generals who replaced Mubarak give way to civilian rule.

"Without Tahrir, we wouldn't have had these elections," said Mohamed Gad in the square that cradled the revolt. "God willing, the elections will succeed and the revolution will triumph."

But many of the young people who took to the streets early this year now fear their revolution risks being stolen, either by the army rulers or by well-organized Islamist parties.

Conservatism could wreck tourism
Ibrahim announced the results of only a handful of clear-cut victories for individual candidates, with most going to run-offs next week, and gave no figures for party lists in the polls.

He said four candidates, two from the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) and two liberals, won over 50 percent of votes for outright victory out of 56 individual seats at stake.

The FJP said 39 of its candidates would fight run-off races. The party dominates a coalition with other smaller parties. Their coalition will be contesting 45 seats.

Yousry Hamad, a senior official of the Salafi Nour Party, said 26 of its contenders were involved in run-offs, 24 of them going head-to-head with FJP candidates.

Muslim Brotherhood bends rules to win big in Egypt

"We will go into the run-offs with all our might and there will be no deals with anyone. We will aim to do better than we have already," Nour leader Emad Abdel Ghafour told Reuters.

In Egypt's complex election process, two-thirds of the 498 seats will go proportionately to party lists, with the rest to individual candidates.

The Muslim Brotherhood, banned but semi-tolerated under Mubarak, has said its FJP expects to win 43 percent of party list votes in the first stage, building on the Islamist group's decades of grassroots social and religious work.

But the Brotherhood's website also forecast that the Salafi al-Nour party would gain 30 percent of the vote, a shock for some Egyptians, especially minority Christian Copts, who fear it will try to impose strict Islamic codes on society.

Nour said Thursday it expected 20 percent of the vote.

PhotoBlog: 'Massive' turnout in Egyptian elections

As in Saudi Arabia, Salafis want to bar women and Christians from executive posts. They would also ban alcohol, mixed beach bathing and "un-Islamic" art and literature.

Such curbs would wreck Egypt's vital tourism industry, which employs about one in eight of the workforce.

More secular-minded Egyptian parties, some of which were only formed after Mubarak's fall, had always feared that they would not have enough time to put up a credible challenge to their experienced and better-funded Islamist rivals.

The liberal multi-party Egyptian Bloc has said it is on track to secure about a fifth of votes for party lists.

Ibrahim, the election chief, acknowledged several violations in Monday and Tuesday's voting, notably campaigning outside polling stations, long queues, failure to stamp some ballots, and late arrival of ballot papers and of a few of the supervising judges. He said these did not affect the results.

Promise of civilian rule
Egypt's ruling generals, who have promised civilian rule by July, have said they will keep powers to appoint or fire a cabinet even after an elected parliament is installed.

Story: Egypt's military takes credit for 1st election turnout

The United States, which still gives Egypt about $1.3 billion a year in mostly military aid, has urged the ruling generals to step aside swiftly and make way for civilian rule.

The leader of the Brotherhood's FJP appeared to set the stage for a political tussle with the military this week by saying the majority in parliament should form the government, but the party later said it was premature to discuss the issue.

The FJP says its priorities are ending corruption, reviving the economy and establishing a true democracy in Egypt.

Ever pragmatic, the Brotherhood may avoid allying with Salafis in parliament and seek more moderate coalition partners to reassure Egyptians and foreigners of its intentions.

Senior FJP official Essam el-Erian said before the vote that

Salafis, who had kept a low profile and shunned politics during Mubarak's 30-year rule, would be "a burden for any coalition."

Kamal al-Ganzouri, asked by the army to form a "national salvation government," aims to complete it soon. State television said the cabinet was still being formed, but included at least half of the outgoing team.

Protesters in Tahrir have rejected Ganzouri, 78.

"It is unacceptable that after the revolution, an old man comes and governs. We don't want the army council anymore. they should go back to barracks," said Menatallah Abdel Meguid, 24.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Next legal step uncertain for O'Keeffe art at Fisk (AP)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Fisk University's decade-long quest to generate cash from a 101-piece art collection donated by the late painter Georgia O'Keeffe is one step closer to fruition.

But it is unclear how quickly the historically black university in Nashville will be able to complete a $30 million deal to sell a 50 percent stake in the collection to the Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Ark.

Under the agreement, the artworks including O'Keefe's own 1927 oil painting "Radiator Building ? Night, New York ? would move between Fisk and the Arkansas museum every two years.

A state appeals court ruling Tuesday threw out a judge's requirement for Fisk to reserve two-thirds of the proceeds to ensure future upkeep of the collection amid the university's shaky financial circumstances.

Fisk officials argued at last year's trial that the school had mortgaged all of its buildings, was running a $2 million annual deficit and had no unrestricted endowment available. The opinion notes that when President Hazel O'Leary was asked whether Fisk was "viable" given the scope of its financial challenges, she responded, "No, not at all."

The 2-1 decision found the lower court didn't have the authority to require the creation of the $20 million endowment to guard against creditors should Fisk declare bankruptcy.

Appeals Judge Frank G. Clement Jr. disagreed.

"The record clearly reveals that that Ms. O'Keeffe never intended for the Collection to be sold or otherwise monetized in order for Fisk University to pay its general operating expenses," Clement wrote in his dissent.

Even with the endowment in place, Fisk would be able to use $10 million to "rise above its current financial predicament," while staying closer to O'Keeffe's original charitable intent, Clement said.

The Crystal Bridges Museum features artwork amassed by Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton, including Asher Durand's landscape painting "Kindred Spirits" and Norman Rockwell's "Rosie the Riveter."

While the majority opinion rules out the judge establishing an endowment requirement, it does not preclude the court from approving one or another "dedicated source of support" for the collection. It also calls on Fisk to lay out how it will use a $1 million pledge from Walton to upgrade the display space and outline how it plans to spend the $30 million from the deal.

The state attorney general's office, which has fought to keep the collection from leaving Nashville, has not yet decided whether to seek an appeal to the state Supreme Court. A Fisk spokesman did not return a message seeking comment.

In 1949, O'Keefe donated 97 pieces to Fisk from the estate of her late husband, the photographer Alfred Stieglitz. They include works by Picasso, Renoir, Cezanne, Marsden Hartley, Alfred Maurer and Charles Demuth, among others.

O'Keeffe, who died in 1986, also gave the school four of her own paintings as part of the gift, which was made to Fisk because the school educated blacks at a time when the South was segregated.

The gift carried the stipulation that it could not be sold or broken up. But Fisk has argued that it can't afford even the $131,000 it currently spends to display the collection each year.

The school in 2002 sought to send the collection on a foreign tour to raise money for the school. Three years later, Fisk announced plans to sell O'Keeffe's "Radiator Building" and Hartley's "Painting No. 3."

That move was blocked by the state attorney general, whose office is responsible for overseeing charitable giving in Tennessee. The current case is the result of protracted legal fights over the collection.
