Members of the Westboro Baptist Church demonstrated before the Ticket City Bowl in Dallas on Monday, adding Penn State's recent sex assault scandal to its usual anti-gay message.
As fans of Penn State and the University of Houston arrived at the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park, about 25 WBC protestors stood behind a police barricade waving signs. Counter-protesters also demonstrated against the church, but football fans paid little attention to either group.
"The focus should be on the team, the schools that are represented by the two teams," said Joe Fleming, a Penn State fan. "Why talk to 25 people who have nothing to do with the game?"
The Kansas church, best known for its shocking anti-gay messages, has become a common sight nationwide and at military funerals. One of the organizers claimed idolatry of college football led to the scandal at Penn State.
"This game has nothing to do with what they are saying," said Jeremy Josephs, a fan from Larksville, Penn. "It takes all the fun out of it."
Another group of counter-protesters arrived with bullhorns, signs, and chants against the church's message. However, the counter-protesters were more interested in mocking the group.
One held a sign that said "Thank God For Athiests" while another woman displayed a hand-lettered poster that said, inexplicably, "Blueberry muffins and banana nut muffins can both be delicious."
There were no arrests reported.
