Is 'Blind Love' Too Much of a Good Thing? | World of Psychology

Is Blind Love Too Much of a Good Thing? In his play The Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare wrote, ?But love is blind, and lovers cannot see / The pretty follies that themselves commit? (2.6.36-37).

Clearly, people have been perceiving love as a force incapable of perceiving the flaws of others for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Even a verse in the Bible states that ?[love] keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth? (1 Corinthians 13:5-6).

But here lies the conundrum: how can love both ?rejoice in the truth? and ?keep no record of wrongs?? Wouldn?t ignoring the wrongdoings of love be an untruthful perception of it?

And yet this is the theory behind the love-is-blind bias.

The love-is-blind bias describes the tendency to perceive those we love (particularly those we love romantically) in an extra-positive, but also less realistic, light. These so-called ?positive illusions? were first specifically analyzed by psychologists Shelley Taylor and Johnathon Brown in 1988. They concluded that an individual?s blindness to another person?s flaws is actually correlated with greater psychological well-being of that individual.

Since this discovery, many researchers have corroborated the beneficial effects of positive illusions in romantic relationships. However, as this topic unfolded, research has also questioned the flip side of love: what happens after disillusionment? After all, positive illusions can only take you so far.

Although positive illusions, or experiences of the ?love-is-blind bias,? can be correlated with level of satisfaction in the relationship, Swami et al. (2009) discovered a negative relationship between the degree of blind love and relationship length. This suggests that as a relationship progresses and an individual gets to know her or his partner better (or possibly with decreasing satisfaction derived from the relationship), the love-is-blind bias may decrease in strength.

But if this glowing perspective decreases as time passes, wouldn?t the perceived quality of the relationship also decline?

After the positive illusions have diminished, one might start to look for better alternatives to the person they once thought was ?perfect.? At this point, the satisfaction and commitment to the relationship would also be compromised and the relationship might be worse off than if those positive illusions had never existed in the first place.

In a more recent study, Swami and his colleagues discovered a positive correlational relationship between positive illusions in relationships and certain types of jealousy, especially anxious jealousy (2012). Anxious jealousy refers to a process where an individual ruminates about the possibility of a mate?s infidelity, and experiences feelings of anxiety, suspicion, worry, and distrust (Barelds & Dijkstra, 2006). After all, if you perceive your partner as perfect, wouldn?t you be concerned that others perceive him this way as well?

But what about even more extreme cases of disillusionment? What happens after Adam betrays Eve?

In cases of relationship betrayal, commitment to the relationship, rather than positive illusions of the other, tends to be the strongest motivation for forgiveness and continuing the relationship (Finkel et al., 2002). After all, without true commitment to each other, a relationship based on positive illusions alone is merely a fatuous love and cannot be sustained in the long term.

This situation certainly holds true for many celebrity relationships, which are typically short-lived and end in some sort of grand catastrophe such as infidelity. Since celebrities are the ultimate icons of positive illusions, it?s easy to understand how a relationship could be built on false impressions and quickly become unsustainable.

In general, it seems that positive illusions might be beneficial during the ?honeymoon? phase of the relationship. But after that stage is over, acceptance of the other?s flaws, not just overlooking them, is truly what will sustain a healthy and prosperous relationship.

Mike Ragogna: Starlight: A Conversation with Joan Armatrading , Plus a Mika Newton Exclusive, and Bill Levenson revisits Duane Allman's Legacy

MIKA NEWTON'S "COME OUT AND PLAY"

The Ukraine's Mika Newton, signed to American Idol judge & Grammy Award-winning producer Randy Jackson's label earlier this year, has a new Paul Oakenfold remix for her latest single, "Come Out And Play." FYI, she's already been featured in The New York Post, MTV, AOL, etc., and her social media stats are 120,000+ on Twitter; 38,000+ on Facebook, racking up millions of combined views on YouTube. Mika's debut single, "Don't Dumb Me Down," was released last summer to rave reviews. The song is co-written by Rune Westberg who's worked with Rebecca Black, Adam Lambert, etc., and BC Jean, who's responsible for the smash hit by Beyonc?, "If I Were A Boy." The music video premiered on MTV's Buzzworthy and was one of the site's Top 10 Most Viewed Videos with over 1.3 million views on YouTube/Vevo.

"I'm so happy that I have a chance to work with Paul," says Mika. "He is not just a great DJ , he is a musician and deep person with a light inside. And our combinations of music, love and lights is what you can hear in this remix."

A Conversation with Joan Armatrading

Mike Ragogna: Joan, tell us everything about yourself, and don't leave anything out.

Joan Armatrading: [laughs] That's just not going to happen, is it. That's not an interview!

MR: Fine. Then let's try this. Can you tell us what went into your new album Starlight?

JA: All right, that's a much easier question to answer. [laughs] In 2003, I made a CD called Lovers Speak and when I was making that CD, I decided that I wanted it to have a certain sound...like an acoustic sound, so it's got that kind of flavor to it. Then I thought when I was making it that it would be great to stick with a genre, because usually when I write, I kind of flip about; I do it with a rock song and a jazz song and a blues song and pop song, you know, all these different genres mixed up on the album. So I thought it would be good to do one genre and stay with that and I hit on coming up with a trilogy, and the trilogy would be blues, rock, jazz. Then in 2007, I wrote Into The Blues, which was very successful. It made me the first female UK artist to go to number one in the Billboard charts and I was nominated for a Grammy again. Then I did This Charming Life in 2010, which was the rock CD, all of the songs were kind of rock songs, then this one, Starlight, is jazz. So that's the trilogy: blues, rock, jazz, and this is the last of those three.

MR: Which begs the question, "What's next?"

JA: I have no idea what I'm going to do next. I'll be waiting, hopefully, like everybody else, with interest. So that's it, and it was just a way of giving myself a challenge of staying within these genres for the whole album to see if I could do it. On all of these albums I just mentioned, I play everything except on this, replacing the drums that I did. But I kept the drums that I did on this one and it's just me.

MR: You said, "It was just me." As you mentioned, you recorded blues, rock, and jazz. But for your music, you probably need to subcategorize it further to be "Joan Armatrading rock, Joan Armatrading blues, Joan Armatrading jazz."

JA: I'm certain, and I'm so glad that you noticed that, because that's exactly what it is. It's my take on the genres, it's my take on what's going on. I'm not trying to be Miles Davis or any other jazz person, so it sounds like me, I think.

MR: Yeah! Okay, let's get into some of the songs starting with "Single Life." When you're single, it's like all your married friends go, "I envy your single life," but there is that tradeoff. It's kind of like, "I am kind of happy I'm single, but on the other hand, you're lucky that you're married."

JA: I know lots of people who are in this situation, so I'm looking at people that I knew, hearing them talk and say that if they want to go off wherever they go, they don't have to think about the wife or the husband or whatever, they just go. Whereas the wife or husband can't just go, they've got the children. They've got to think about all these other people before they can just decide to go off wherever. So it's just looking at people and just thinking, "What's it like?" That's what I'm looking at, I'm looking at that kind of freedom, but at the same time, people can look at somebody else's life.

MR: So this isn't autobiographical.

JA: I'm not talking about myself. I write songs, as I've always said and is always the case, that are written from observation. I write them as if they're about me because that's the best way I know of writing. Everything I tend to do is in the first person. That's how I write. This is my twentieth album. I can't be writing every song about myself. I said that to somebody and they said, "Well some artists do write everything about themselves." If somebody's written twenty albums and every single song was about them, I'd think they were quite an insular person.

MR: Well doesn't it also make sense that as you're getting older and growing as an artist that it's more like you're having observations of the world that are more accurate and coming from not only wisdom from maturing but also from collective experiences in life. Maybe it isn't all about yourself, but don't you get to "discuss" lessons in life?

JA: Well, yeah, absolutely, it's just happens that I've always written from observation. That's what writers are, they're observers. You look at stuff. Most people see a certain situation happen, but they don't think, "Oh, that's a great story, I should write it down." Most people just kind of notice, or maybe they don't even notice it. But the writer, whether a songwriter or an author or even a painter, as a creative person, you tend to notice things that make you want to express them through interpretive dance, through music, through the written word or however. You tend to want to express that thing from that observation. So that's really what happens, and as you say, as you grow older, you have more experience, you probably notice things more. But in terms of myself, I've always been this observer looking at people but writing it as if it was me because that's the way I've always written, and that's the way I tend to write best. You fall into the thing that you do best.

MR: Joan, another concept many can appreciate comes up in your recording "Back On Track." Everybody wants to get things--life, love, etc.--back on track when things go wrong, even going as far as making a deal with, well, Mother Nature, in this case.

JA: Yeah, I've written this song and I've found myself saying this when I was on tour a couple of times, "Great, we're back on track," not because I'm thinking of the song necessarily, but the song did come to mind when I would use that expression. It's because things happen and you do want to get back on track, you're right.

MR: In "Close To Me," I love the concept of "...it's not the first time that I've been in love, but I've never been in love like this before." Do you think people feel like that whenever they come into a new love?

JA: Absolutely. These are themes of mine, "Close To Me," about people falling in love and getting to know each other, "Tell Me," which is about friendship, is about realizing that friendship is very important and that it's another kind of love. I wrote a song called "More Than One Kind Of Love," which, again, is about friendship, and "Starlight," which is about positivity. It's about helping yourself want to do something, have a go, use your talents, use your personality, do whatever you have to do. I'm not saying you have to go that far, but you do owe it to yourself to try and make things happen if that's what you really, really, want. I come back to these recurring themes. "Close To Me," the first time people had been hearing it live, it was incredible how they took to that song and you saw people kind of really get into it and look at each other and sing it. People were singing it straight away. It's incredible.

MR: When you look at "Starlight"'s lyrics, it's a very wise song. For some, the ends justify the means as far as "going for it" to be a star or get famous or whatever. On the other hand, at the end, you're saying, "Don't give yourself a reason to get knocked back." My impression of that was, "You don't have to go that route, you can just use your personality. Use what you've got that are attributes."

JA: That's right absolutely.

MR: So that leads nicely to my question what advice do you have for new artists?

JA: I don't know what advice I have for new artists, but what I did do on my 2012 tour when I went around Britain was I took fifty-six local artists, fine artists, with me. So instead of taking one person around who's my support, I had fifty-six people. In each city, if they were from Birmingham, then they played the Birmingham gig. If they were from London, they played the London gig. If they were from Brighton, they played the Brighton gig. There were fifty-six people each playing a different city on the tour. I think that's what I try to do. The great thing is if you're starting out, you should be able to play to people, get them to hear your songs, get them to see you, get them to know you and your personality, just introduce yourself and, hopefully, they will become friends of yours. That's what I did, and that's actually the answer to the question. That's my advice, to get out there and try and get people to see who you are. Because I was on tour and I could kind of do it, then I did it. It was hard work.

MR: It seems like you're always performing, so will you be touring further to support the album?

JA: I toured the UK and Europe all of 2012 and will tour Australia and New Zealand in March of 2013 to finish up the tour. Unfortunately, I won't get to North America with this CD. This will the the first time in my career that I will not be touring North America in support of a CD.

"MOST THOROUGH BOX SET EVER" AWARD GOES TO...

Ladies and gentleman, this is how you do a box set. Bill Levenson--the man who all but invented the medium with his iconic Eric Clapton and Allman Brothers projects over two decades ago--has researched and pulled tracks from virtually every musical nook and cranny Duane Allman's guitars have appeared in or on, gathering them within this fabulous 7-disc anthology, Skydog: The Duane Allman Retrospective. With the exception of historical "complete" sets (as in an artist's own recordings), this multi-disc retrospective nails it with tracks by The Allman Brothers, Herbie Mann, Boz Scaggs, Wilson Pikett, Laura Nyro, Delaney & Bonnie, The Grateful Dead, King Curtis, Clarence Carter, Arthur Conley, Aretha Franklin and beyond. Hopefully, Skydog resets the paradigm on how to put a proper box set together, presenting an artist--especially our most inspired instrumentalists--in a more complete light.

Attic Ventilators - Air Concepts HVAC Services

Attic VentilatorIn several regions of the United States, powered attic ventilators enjoy the pleasures of a positive reputation. They are promoted by builders, shingle manufactures, roofers, HVAC contractors, utilities, weekender material retailers, ventilation manufactures, consultants and others. Extending shingle life, protecting shingle warrantee, removing moisture from attics and reducing the air conditioning load by the removal of attic heat are their believed benefits. These regional cultures accept and sometimes expect the use of powered attic ventilators. Cash flow in their regional economic systems is saturated with their use. Those who manufacture sell or install powered attic ventilators in these regional cultures could experience financial hardships should it be suggested that powered roof ventilators should not be used. However, that is our central theme as a result of our measurements of some of their unplanned impacts on houses.

A review of some of the important issues Attic Ventilator?s & the problems they can cause in your home includes the following:

  1. Ventilators can cause negative pressures in combustion appliance zones. By themselves or in conjunction with other negative pressures they can cause backdrafting.
  2. Ventilators run during electric utilities peak demand period and can become a peak demand problem.
  3. Ventilators can draw conditioned air out of houses and cause the air conditioner to run more.
    1. They can cause increased latent load that air conditioners must remove.
    2. They can increase the cost for air conditioning for the homeowner.
    3. They can cause temperature discomfort, hot areas, which homeowners try to solve by increasing cooling through closing some supply registers which can cause additional problems.
  4. Ventilators can be an unexpected and undocumented source of increased infiltration rates in houses.
  5. If a powered ventilator is used, more energy will be consumed by the motor than will be saved on the air conditioning bill.
  6. It has been proven that when attic ventilation was increased it did not necessarily reduce the transfer of heat across the ceiling insulation into the house.
  7. It was proven by research and field testing that by running Attic Ventilator?s in climates with seasonal environments changes; that when the outside humidity (moisture) & temperature is high you introducing moisture back into your home, attic areas and crawlspaces.
  8. Ventilators can cause your home to draw into negative pressures, increasing your overall energy usage.

What really happens is that when that power attic ventilator runs, it?s going to pull air from wherever it can find it. Since air takes the path of least resistance, some of it will most likely be coming from the conditioned space in your home. So basically what you?re doing is air conditioning your attic. The longer the fan runs the more conditioned air it pulls into the attic.

If you have a perfectly air-sealed ceiling, you?re not going to have this problem, of course. The reality, however, is that few ceilings are leak-free. Since air needs only a pressure difference and a pathway to move, and your ceiling probably has plenty of pathways, it?s best not to enhance any pressure differences that will increase air movement into or out of your home. Air sealing & tighten is key along with changing the overall environmental conditions. With properly sized dehumidifiers you can remove the moisture and condition your space keeping it nice and dry without bringing high humid air moisture back in.

In other words, don?t install that power attic ventilator. If you have some installed already, disable them so they never run.

Power attic ventilators can cause problems even without air conditioning. One potential problem would be sucking moist, moldy air up from the crawl space into the house.

Another would be backdrafting a water heater and putting carbon monoxide in the house. These are real problems from real houses that have really happened.

The first step before investing in an Attic Ventilator is to have your home properly assisted by a certified Home Energy Auditor to see at a minimum, if you are a good candidate. Don?t be fooled by fast talking salesman that hide the truth when it comes to the negative issues attic ventilators can cause to your home.? It is Key that you have the whole house approach before jumping to this so called quick fix. Having a Home Energy Audit, Blower door Test & Duct Testing can be some methods to properly examine & resolve your homes infiltration issues. By locating infiltration and improving the tightness in your home you can increase your comfort and save on your overall energy consumption. ?It is recommended that if a powered attic ventilator is chosen as part of an attic ventilation strategy, the following guidelines should be provided. Make sure you are a good candidate. The installer should provide a good air barrier between the house and the attic and adequate, net free, vent area should be provided. Confirmation of safe operation is provided by measuring not by ignoring, guessing, or hoping.

Iran sanctions could distort region's economy for years: report

LONDON (Reuters) - Sanctions on Iran are so intricately woven that they will be very hard to untangle, while their impact in swelling Iran's black economy could undermine regional stability for years to come, the International Crisis Group says in a new report.

Describing the "unintended consequences" of sanctions, the report noted that those with the best access to state resources, including the elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), had been best placed to circumvent the sanctions, while smuggling networks had become an integral part of the economy.

"This does not necessarily harm the regime. To the contrary, it has facilitated a symbiosis between state-affiliated organizations such as the IRGC and transnational smuggling networks," it said.

"Over time, organized crime networks likely will become more sophisticated, enabling them to survive even after sanctions have been lifted. Iran's proximity to two countries rating highest on the corruption scale - Iraq and Afghanistan - likely contributes to cross-border criminality, undermining longer-term stability."

Increasingly tough sanctions imposed on Iran's oil and banking sectors over its nuclear program have put enormous pressure on Iran's economy and forced it to seek innovative ways around them.

The West says Iran's nuclear activities conceal a drive towards a weapons capability, an allegation Tehran denies.

The ICG's recommendations are broadly similar to those of many other Iran experts. It calls for a gradual easing of sanctions in return for Iranian concessions on its nuclear program, accompanied by direct talks between Iran and the United States.

But the report, "Spider Web: The Making and Unmaking of Iran Sanctions", is unusual in underscoring the difficulties of easing sanctions, despite the limited progress made this week in talks between Iran and major world powers on Tehran's nuclear program.

Sanctions have become so extensive and complex, and subject to so many different laws worldwide, that it will be hard to find the flexibility needed for diplomacy, the ICG said.

It quoted an unnamed sanctions expert in Washington as saying easing the sanctions was "like dancing in a minefield".

"There are tripwires everywhere," the expert said.

As Iran has adapted its economy to sanctions, the introduction of another tier of exchange rates, the use of barter, front companies and the informal "hawala" system for financial transactions have all contributed to the rise of the informal or black economy, the ICG said.

"Crime rates and corruption have been rising; and smuggling is booming as clandestine networks replace commercial ones. Indeed, smuggling networks are becoming an integral part of the shadow economy that reportedly accounts for 21 percent of GDP."

The growth of the informal economy in the region has been a particular worry in Afghanistan, where the United States has been unable to convince the government in Kabul to crack down on corruption as part of efforts to restore peace before most foreign combat troops are withdrawn at the end of 2014.

In Iran's other neighbor, Pakistan, the black economy has created space for militant groups to flourish, often funded by money from the Gulf, also routed through the hawala network.

The White House, Totally Gutted

In 1948, the White House was almost abandoned. After it had been burned by the British in 1814, and endured the stress of the addition of modern amenities like plumbing and electricity, it was on the verge of being condemned. Staircases were sagging, a fresco in the East Room was held in by scaffolding, and it was actually dangerous to be inside. In fact, the 1948 social season had to be cancelled (gasp!). More »

Italy vote hits world markets, euro; U.S. stocks up

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks jumped on Tuesday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke reassured investors about the continuation of stimulus measures, bucking a downward trend in global equities and the euro on the uncertainty created by Italy's election.

A closely watched gauge of European stock market volatility hit a 2013 high after the muddy election outcome in Italy raised fresh concern about the outlook for the euro zone's debt crisis.

Investors are fearful that the strength of the vote for anti-austerity parties will weaken efforts to reform Italy's public finances and its labor laws, damaging the euro zone's efforts to resolve its three-year old debt crisis.

Markets across Europe fell on the vote results, with Italy's FTSE MIB among the hardest hit, tumbling 4.9 percent.

"This should remind us the crisis has only been in remission," said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank in Cleveland, Ohio.

The uncertainty led to a sharp rise in volatility, with Europe's VSTOXX index, which reflects demand for protection against a drop in major European equities, hitting a new year's high on Tuesday at 24.73.

The MSCI world equity index was down 0.5 percent, while the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index ended 1.4 percent lower.

Southern European government bond prices sank. Italy's 10-year bond yields rose as much as half a point to 4.86 percent, their highest since mid-December.

U.S. stocks climbed as Bernanke strongly defended the Fed's bond-buying stimulus, easing worries that monetary policymakers might be getting cold feet about continuing the extraordinary measures to support the economy.

Bernanke "certainly said everything the market needed to feel in order to get comfortable again," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 117.34 points, or 0.85 percent, at 13,901.51. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 9.09 points, or 0.61 percent, at 1,496.94. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 14.22 points, or 0.46 percent, at 3,130.47.

In the foreign exchange market, the euro dropped against the dollar and remained highly susceptible to further selling as political gridlock in Italy caused the government's borrowing costs to jump.

"Events in Italy show that politicians are pushing back at fiscal austerity measures," said Paul Robson, currency strategist at RBS. "It is negative for the euro."

The euro last traded at $1.3048, down 0.1 percent on the day, but above a low of $1.3017 hit during early London hours, which was the lowest level since January 7. Against the yen, the euro last traded down 0.6 percent at 119.24 yen.

The dollar erased early gains and was down for a second straight day against the yen. It last traded at 91.34 yen, down 0.5 percent on the day and not far from a low of 90.92 yen on Monday, its lowest in nearly a month.

The Italian elections weighed on oil prices. Brent crude oil futures fell by more than $2 a barrel to $112.41, touching the lowest level since January 24. Brent crude for April delivery was down $1.94 at $112.50.

U.S. BONDS SLIP

The fear of an uncertain political and economic landscape in Italy, along with Bernanke's comments, inspired a persistent bid for U.S. debt, cushioning a fall in Treasury prices.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was down 4/32, with the yield at 1.8774 percent.

U.S. financial markets were rattled last week when minutes of the Fed's January meeting showed some officials were thinking of scaling back its monetary stimulus earlier than expected.

In his testimony, Bernanke also urged lawmakers to avoid sharp spending cuts set to start taking effect on Friday.

"Bernanke's commentary showed the Fed chairman wants to continue quantitative easing (i.e. bond purchases) and keep its general stance of monetary policy accommodation," said Eric Stein, vice president and portfolio manager at Boston-based Eaton Vance Investment Managers.

The Fed is currently buying $85 billion in bonds each month and has said it plans to keep purchasing assets until it sees a substantial improvement in the outlook for the labor market.

Adding to support for U.S. stocks, U.S. home prices closed out 2012 with the biggest annual gain in more than six years, according to the S&P/Case Shiller index. U.S. government data showed that sales of new homes spiked in January, the latest sign that the long-suffering housing market was on the mend.

A separate report showed U.S. consumer confidence rose more than expected this month as Americans shrugged off worries about fiscal policy.

PFT: SF surely will trade Alex Smith, but to whom?

350x-1AP

Last year, the NFL stripped $36 million in cap space from the Redskins, who along with the Cowboys apparently took the term ?uncapped year? too literally in 2010.

In response, the Redskins employed half-measures to recover the cap dollars, filing a grievance under the labor deal that did nothing other than stir up a cockeyed collusion claim from the NFLPA.

This year, with half of the penalty due to hit the 2013 salary cap, the Redskins could be opting for a more complete assault on the league?s position.? Or at least threatening it.

According to Mark Maske and Mike Jones of the Washington Post, the Redskins are spreading the word in Indianapolis that they?re considering legal action aimed at delaying the start of free agency while litigation proceeds regarding the question of whether the Redskins? legal rights were violated.? The Redskins are telling agents that any contract talks will be delayed until the situation is resolved.

If the Redskins proceed, it would be a big deal.? And if they delay the start of free agency until their claims are resolved, it would be a huge deal.

We addressed the situation a couple of weeks ago, reporting that the Redskins were still upset about the situation but explaining that their options are limited.? They could bebluffing about going to court in order to get, for example, half of their cap money back (i.e., the $18 million that would apply to this year?s cap).? But the NFL could choose to call their bluff and go to court.

Either way, Daniel Snyder could be inching toward ground previously occupied by the late Al Davis:? Snyder could soon be suing his partners.

Cleric resigns after allegations of 'inappropriate' conduct with priests

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's most senior Roman Catholic cleric resigned on Monday following allegations he behaved in an inappropriate way with priests, and said he would not take part in the election of Pope Benedict's replacement.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien said he had tendered his resignation some months ago, ahead of his 75th birthday in March and because he was suffering from "indifferent health".

The Vatican said the pope, who steps down on Thursday, had accepted O'Brien's resignation as archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh.

O'Brien, an outspoken opponent of gay marriage, has been reported to the Vatican over allegations of inappropriate behavior stretching back 30 years, according to Britain's Observer newspaper.

The cardinal, who last week advocated allowing Catholic priests to marry as many found it difficult to cope with celibacy, rejected the allegations and was seeking legal advice, his spokesman said.1

"Looking back over my years of ministry: For any good I have been able to do, I thank God. For any failures, I apologize to all whom I have offended," O'Brien said in a statement, which made no reference to the recent allegations.

He said he would not attend the election next month of a new pope, saying: "I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me - but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor."

The Observer, which gave little detail on the claims, said three priests and a former priest, from a Scottish diocese, had complained over incidents dating back to 1980.

One said the cardinal formed an "inappropriate relationship" with him while another complained of unwanted behavior by O'Brien after a late-night drinking session.

Last year, O'Brien's comments labeling gay marriage a "grotesque subversion" landed him with a "Bigot of the Year" award from British gay rights group Stonewall.

Move over iPad mini, Samsung unveils Galaxy Note 8.0

BetaNews writes, Late February means another Mobile World Congress, and the rush to make big, splashy product announcements before the show starts. Samsung jumped in early today, by announcing an 8-inch tablet with stylus -- Galaxy Note 8.0. The slate is about the same size as Apple's iPad, with comparable screen resolution, but features the S Pen and supporting software. Why just touch and type when you can draw, too? Samsung's slate joins the Galaxy Note II smartphone and 10-inch tablet, with stylus being the compelling feature that market leader Apple doesn't offer on any iOS device. Like the recent update?

Catholic activists petition LA cardinal not to join papal conclave

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Roman Catholic activists on Saturday petitioned a U.S. cardinal to recuse himself from taking part in selecting a new pope so as not to insult survivors of sexual abuse by priests committed while he was archbishop of Los Angeles.

The activists delivered a petition with nearly 10,000 signatures to the North Hollywood church where Cardinal Roger Mahony resides.

"It's a total slap in the face to victims to think (Mahony) can cover up 25 years of child sex abuse and then go prancing off to Rome like a prince of the Church," said Joelle Casteix, western regional director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

As archbishop of Los Angeles from 1985 until 2011, Mahony worked to send priests known to be abusers out of state to shield them from law enforcement scrutiny in the 1980s, according to church files unsealed under a U.S. court order last month.

Although his successor, Archbishop Jose Gomez, removed him from all public and administrative duties, Mahony has announced his intention to be among 117 cardinals allowed into the Vatican's Sistine Chapel to vote for the next leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

Last week, Pope Benedict XVI, 85, announced his resignation effective February 28, making him the first pope in centuries to abdicate rather than die in office.

His eight-year reign will be remembered by many for the child sex abuse scandal in Europe and the United States - most of which took place in the 1980s but which came to light more recently.

In California, at a news conference outside the St. Charles Borromeo Church, where Mahony is in residence, members of the groups held up signs reading, "Respect the victims. Honor the church. Hold leaders accountable."

"This should be a time for new beginnings," said Chris Pumpelly, a spokesman for social justice nonprofit Catholics United, before delivering the petitions to the church. If Mahony were to vote, "it would be a step backward. It would be a validation of the old ways."

It was unclear whether Mahony was at the church at the time, or if he would receive the documents before he left for Rome.

Earlier on Saturday, Mahony was deposed for more than three hours about his handling of sex-abuse cases. It was the first time he was asked about the church files unsealed last month, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Influential Italian magazine Famiglia Cristiana, or "Christian Family," has also questioned whether Mahony should be part of the conclave. Many readers responded online that he should not.

On Friday, Mahony took to Twitter to repeat his intent on voting: "Just a few short hours before my departure for Rome. Will be tweeting often from Rome, except during the actual Conclave itself. Prayers!"

Mad Catz F.R.E.Q. 7 gaming headset hands-on

Mad Catz announced the F.R.E.Q. 7 gaming headset last week, and the company has the $200 cans on hand here at Mobile World Congress. As you may recall, the marquee spec is Dolby Pro Logic IIx processing, which expands 5.1-channel audio to 7.1 channels for a richer aural experience. Another cool feature: these over-ears come bundled with both a standard stereo connector and a cord with USB for connecting directly to your computer (both have mini-USB on one end). The F.R.E.Q. 7 wasn't plugged in so we can't speak to sound quality, but they feel lightweight, and the red color really pops in real life. (There's also a matte black option.) The devices are currently available for pre-order, but you can get a hands-on look now in our gallery.

Cyprus votes for president as clock ticks on bailout deal

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cypriots vote in a runoff on Sunday to elect a president who must clinch a bailout deal so the island nation can avoid a financial meltdown that would revive the euro zone crisis.

Conservative leader Nicos Anastasiades, who favors hammering out a quick deal with foreign lenders, is favored to win against Communist-backed rival Stavros Malas, who is more wary of the austerity terms accompanying any rescue.

Financial markets are hoping for an Anastasiades victory that speeds up a joint rescue by the European Union and International Monetary Fund before the island runs out of cash and derails fragile confidence returning to the euro zone.

The 66-year-old lawyer took more than 45 percent of the vote in last Sunday's first round, easily beating Malas who took 27 percent. An anti-austerity candidate who finished third refused to back either contender, boosting Anastasiades' chances.

The winner takes the reins of a nation ravaged by its worst economic crisis in four decades, with unemployment at a record high of 15 percent. Pay cuts and tax hikes in preparation for a bailout have further soured the normally sunny national mood.

"Whatever happens in this vote, the day after is going to be very difficult for Cyprus," said Demetris Charalambous, a 56-year-old convenience store owner. "People are really depressed. Business is bad, we are at risk of shutting down."

Prospects for a quick bailout that revives the sinking Cypriot economy - which the EU says will shrink a worse than expected 3.5 percent this year - have been equally grim.

Talks to rescue Nicosia have dragged on eight months since it first sought help, after a Greek sovereign debt restructuring saddled its banks with losses. It is expected to need up to 17 billion euros in aid - worth the size of its entire economy.

Virtually all rescue options - from a bailout loan to a debt writedown or slapping losses on bank depositors - are proving unfeasible because they push Cypriot debt up to unmanageable levels or risk hurting investor sentiment elsewhere in the bloc.

German misgivings about the nation's commitment to fighting money laundering and strong financial ties with Russia have further complicated the negotiations.

END UNCERTAINTY

Longstanding anger over the island's 40-year-old division into the Greek-speaking south and Turkish north has been relegated to a distant second as an election issue this year, with both candidates vying to portray himself as the right man to lead the country out of its financial quagmire.

"We must end the uncertainty and give Cyprus back its lost international credibility and its prestige in Europe," Anastasiades said as he ended his campaign.

A heavy smoker known for his no-nonsense style, Anastasiades is widely respected but suffered political humiliation nine years ago when he supported a United Nations blueprint to reunify the island that was later rejected by the public.

He has suggested the island may even need a bridge loan to tide it over until a rescue is nailed down.

His younger rival Malas is handicapped by the support of the incumbent Communists who are perceived as having mismanaged the economic crisis and a munitions blast in 2011.

Still, he is expected to get a boost from his pledges to drive a hard bargain with lenders and anti-austerity rhetoric that resonates with many Cypriots struggling to make ends meet.

"I want to see someone worthy win, who will cut out cronyism and be decisive about the problems we have," said George Nearchou, 58, an unemployed electrician.

"I am however very worried about austerity, people are very angry. I see a popular uprising."

House GOP eyes watered-down Violence Against Women Act

Prachatai/Flickr

The Senate has already passed a bipartisan reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, and as we discussed yesterday, the House is set to move on the issue as well. The only question is whether the GOP-led chamber would consider the Senate version or vote instead on its own, watered-down bill.

As Sahil Kapur reports, we now know the answer: it's the latter.

The House GOP's legislation ... reflects some movement in the Senate's direction but falls short of a breakthrough on the central disputes that scuttled reauthorization of VAWA last year, namely, coverage for gay, Native American and illegal immigrant women. Democrats quickly rejected the bill. [...]

Unlike the Senate-passed version, the House GOP's proposed legislation would not guarantee equal coverage for LGBT victims of domestic violence, and it would create a hurdle for tribal courts to prosecute non-Native Americans charged with assaulting women on tribal lands.

In other words, we've made very little progress from where we were in the last Congress -- with far-right House members unwilling to act on a bipartisan Senate bill because of culture-war hang-ups, preferring a weaker proposal that stakeholders believe would leave some domestic-violence victims behind.

"The bill does not protect LGBT victims from discrimination by a service provider nor does it specifically include services to LGBT victims as an underserved population," said David Stacy, deputy legislative director for Human Rights Campaign, told TPM after reviewing the language. "The Senate bill provisions are urgently needed so that actual resources are available to address domestic violence and sexual assault among LGBT families."

Still, House Republicans are reportedly eager to move on this, and we can expect a floor vote as early as next Tuesday, just four days away. If it passes, watch for a contentious conference-committee process.

There was a time in the very-recent past when reauthorizing VAWA was one of the easiest, most one-sided votes in Congress. Now, those days are over.

First lady jokes about hosting 'Tonight Show'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Michelle Obama says she's eyeing another campaign in 2016 and, contrary to speculation, it doesn't involve running for public office.

During her first appearance on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" on Friday, the host asked her to consider a Michelle-Hillary ticket for president in 2016. The latter is former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who lost the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination to Mrs. Obama's husband. Speculation is rampant that Clinton is gearing up to run again in 2016.

"You know, I have my eye actually on another job. And I hear that when Jay Leno retires that 'The Tonight Show' position is going to open and I'm thinking about putting my hat in the ring," the first lady says, according to an excerpt of the appearance released before airtime by NBC.

"I got my hat in the ring," Fallon replies.

Mrs. Obama then asks for his opinion, but Fallon's answer suggests he's had a quick change of heart about challenging her. "I'm done thinking about it," he says, laughing.

The first lady visited the late-night talk show to promote "Let's Move," her anti-childhood obesity campaign, which marked its third anniversary this month.

She also danced with Fallon, who was dressed like a woman.

Besides the appearance on "Late Night," Mrs. Obama discussed the initiative while in New York City during segments taped for broadcast Tuesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" and Thursday on "The Dr. Oz Show." Next Wednesday, Mrs. Obama embarks on a two-day promotional tour, with stops in Clinton, Miss.; Chicago; and Springfield, Mo.

For the second anniversary of "Let's Move," she and Fallon turned the East Room of the White House into a playground. They did pushups, twirled hula hoops, and competed at dodge ball and tug-of-war before the first lady triumphed over the comedian in a climactic potato sack race.

94% Barbara

All Critics (52) | Top Critics (15) | Fresh (49) | Rotten (3)

Hoss is fantastic. Barbara is ice cold at the start, understandably so. Yet Hoss makes her sympathetic.

[Leaves] you drained and horrified.

Sometimes, the sun shines and the wind blows fresh and the very elements that make for intense hardship also open a window on intense joy.

Hoss is mesmerizing as a woman who holds it all together to the point of losing herself.

It's one terrific film, as smart, thoughtful and emotionally involving as just about anything that's out there.

It's a quiet film built of careful details.

Hoss' outstanding performance is a deep well of subtle yet unmistakable motives and reactions.

A crafty filmmaker, Petzold gives us information in increments. During the first half of his movie, which he co-wrote, we are all but left to our own devices; yet it is fascinating, and appropriate.

Worth seeing ... both for Petzold's singular aesthetic and for Hoss, who as usual is a riveting presence.

A well-observed, compelling, and evocative character piece, haunted by the ghosts of Germany's recent past.

Feels like total immersion into the sights, stresses, and the subtle solidarity among middle-class professionals living in the workers' paradise that Petzold's parents fled.

[R]esides somewhere in an unsatisfying borderland between drama and thriller, never quite catching fire as either...

A superbly crafted low-boil drama that gets its hooks into you the old-fashioned way, through character, and highlights the difficulties and cost of living by principles.

Subtly intriguing and ambiguous, it's filled with suspicion and subterfuge.

Despite the limited scope of its predictable narrative, "Barbara" remains a compelling character study thanks to Nina Hoss's enigmatic performance in the title role.

Christian Petzold's latest thriller threatens to cross over the line from minimalism to nihilism.

Both insightful and poignant, but not mawkish...an intriguing character study set against the backdrop of a dark time in history.

The plotting, the planning and the deepening relationships don't make for kinetic action, but they are the foundation for a smart, engrossing film.

Drew Peterson gets 38 years in third wife's murder

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) ? Drew Peterson ? the swaggering former suburban Chicago police officer who gained notoriety after his much-younger fourth wife vanished in 2007 ? was sentenced to 38 years in prison on Thursday for murdering his third wife.

Illinois does not have the death penalty, and the 59-year-old Peterson had faced a maximum 60-year prison term. The judge gave him four years' credit for time he has served since his arrest.

Jurors convicted Peterson in September in Kathleen Savio's 2004 death. Neighbors found the 40-year-old's body in a dry bathtub at home with a gash on her head ? her hair soaked in blood.

Peterson is also a suspect in the disappearance of Stacy Peterson ? who was 23-years-old when she vanished ? but he hasn't been charged in her case. It was her disappearance that led authorities to take another look at Savio's death and eventually reclassify it from an accident to a homicide.

Fascination nationwide with Peterson arose from speculation he sought to use his law enforcement expertise to get away with murder.

Peterson shocked the courtroom during his sentencing hearing by shouting, "I did not kill Kathleen!" as he made a statement to the court.

Someone in the court audience responded by shouting back, "Yes, you did," and the person was then removed from the room.

Earlier Thursday, Judge Edward Burmila denied a defense request to grant Peterson a retrial. Peterson's current attorneys contended his former lead attorney, Joel Brodsky, botched the initial trial.

Brodsky stepped down from the defense team in November, as his quarrel with Peterson's current lawyers worsened.

Steve Greenberg was on the trial team and still represents Peterson. Greenberg says Brodsky forced Peterson to take part in a damaging pretrial media blitz and that it was Brodsky's decision to call a witness whose testimony ended up backfiring on the defense.

Brodsky has called allegations from his former colleagues "a bald-faced lie" and insisted the entire legal team agreed on trial strategy.

A turning point at the trial came when the defense called a divorce attorney who said he spoke to Stacy Peterson before she vanished. Rather than blunting her credibility, the witness stressed to jurors that Stacy Peterson seemed to truly believe her husband killed Savio.

Before his 2009 arrest, the glib, cocky Drew Peterson seemed to taunt authorities, suggesting a "Win a Date With Drew Contest" and then, after his arrest, "Win a Conjugal Visit With Drew Contest." More recently, his story inspired a TV movie starring Rob Lowe.

The case began with a gruesome discovery. A neighbor came across Savio's body March 1, 2004. She was face down in her dry bathtub, her thick, black hair soaked in blood and a 2-inch gash was on the back of her head.

The death of the aspiring nurse was initially deemed an accident. After Stacy Peterson vanished in 2007, Savio's body was exhumed and re-examined.

Drew Peterson had divorced Savio a year before her death. His motive for killing her, prosecutors said, was fear that a pending settlement would wipe him out financially.

Peterson's personality loomed large over his 2012 trial, illustrated by crowds of bystanders gathered outside the courthouse in a circuslike atmosphere after his conviction last year, cheering as prosecutors walked by and shouting, "Loser. Loser. Loser," at defense attorneys.

The verdict was a vindication for Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow and his team, who gambled by putting on a case they conceded was filled with holes.

Prosecutors suspect Peterson killed his sandy-haired fourth wife because she could finger him for Savio's death, but her body has never been found and no charges have ever been filed. Jurors weren't supposed to link her disappearance to Savio's death, and prosecutors were prohibited from mentioning the subject.

Peterson has maintained his fourth wife ran off with another man and is still alive.

Prosecutors faced enormous hurdles as they tried Peterson for Savio's death.

They had no physical evidence tying him to her death and no witnesses placing him at the scene. They were forced to rely on typically barred hearsay ? statements Savio made to others before she died and that Stacy Peterson made before she vanished. Illinois passed a hearsay law in 2008 tailored to Peterson's case, dubbed "Drew's Law," which assisted in making some the evidence admissible at Peterson's trial.

The hearsay ? any information reported by a witness not based on the witness' direct knowledge ? included a friend testifying that Savio told her Peterson once put a knife to her throat and warned her, "I could kill you and make it look like an accident."

Peterson's attorneys have said they might appeal all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court on grounds the hearsay law is unconstitutional.

London neighborhood wants its Banksy back

LONDON ? A London neighborhood wants its Banksy back.

A stencil by the famed but secretive graffiti artist of a young boy sewing Union Jack bunting on an antique sewing machine appeared on the side of a north London bargain store last May. Soon the gritty Turnpike Lane area was drawing art lovers keen to see Banksy?s typically cheeky take on the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II?s 60 years on the British throne.

Last week it vanished, leaving nothing but a rectangle of exposed brick ? only to reappear on the website of a Miami auction house. Listed as ?Slave Labor (Bunting Boy),? it is due to be sold Saturday with an estimated price of between $500,000 and $700,000.

London authorities concede the sale is probably legal ? the mural was on private property. But they hope moral pressure will make the auction house change its mind.

?(It?s) totally unethical that something so valued should be torn without warning from its community context,? local lawmaker Lynne Featherstone said.

Featherstone said she had asked the building?s owner for an explanation, but had yet to receive a reply. Poundland, the store that occupies the building, said it had nothing to do with the removal.

On Wednesday, the local government authority appealed to the auctioneer for the return of the work.

In an open letter to auction house chief Frederic Thut, Haringey Council called the artwork ?a much-loved local landmark? that had been visited by people from around the world.

?We understand that there may be nothing illegal in the way this artwork was quietly removed from our streets and put up for auction by you in Miami,? the letter said.

?But for you to allow it to be sold for huge profit in this way would be morally wrong, and completely contrary to the spirit in which we believe it was given to our community.?

Councilor Alan Strickland said the work had become ?a real symbol of local pride? in an area badly hit in England?s August 2011 riots. He said its disappearance had left residents ?shocked and angry.?

Strickland said he had asked England?s Arts Council for help retrieving the work.

The government-funded council called the loss of the Banksy ?a shame,? but said there was little it could do. The council has the power to stop the export of culturally significant artworks, but only if they are more than 50 years old.

Fine Art Auctions Miami said it had acquired the work legally, but gave few other details. It said in a statement that it had ?done all the necessary due diligence about the ownership of the work.?

?Unfortunately we are not able to provide you with any information by law and contract about any details of this consignment,? it said. ?We are more than happy to do so if you can prove that the works were acquired and removed illegally.?

Banksy?s publicist did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The anonymous street artist, who refuses to reveal his real name, began his career spray-painting buildings and bridges in his home city of Bristol in southwest England. His often satirical images include two policemen kissing, armed riot police with yellow smiley faces and a chimpanzee with a sign bearing the words ?Laugh now, but one day I?ll be in charge.?

Original Banksy works now sell for up to hundreds of thousands of dollars and the artist has become an international celebrity. He has created sequences for ?The Simpsons? and directed an Academy Award-nominated documentary, ?Exit Through the Gift Shop.?

His works are still sometimes obliterated by zealous local officials, street cleaners or ? as in this case ? taken off buildings along with a chunk of wall for private sale.
