Some First Friday events focus on holiday gift-giving - KansasCity.com

On December First Friday, many gallery-goers keep an eye out for gifts, and the evening includes several shows and events geared to gift-giving.

Blue Gallery is back with its ?Wonder Wall? of artworks priced at $500 or less. The Leedy-Voulkos Art Center is devoting one gallery to a Holiday Bazaar of small works and handmade goods, including paintings, ceramics, prints, scarves and jewelry. At the Late Show, Tom Deatherage presents his annual ?Naughty Elves? show of affordable works, including new roosters and bunnies by Nora Othic priced at $150-$300. The artist sold 17 paintings from her November one-person show at the gallery, prompting Deatherage to cease making noises about getting out of the business. When it comes to gifts, most people would say you can?t go wrong with wine, which is the focus of the Mattie Rhodes Art Gallery?s The Art of Giving event. Featuring labels based on works by artists from Kansas City and Oaxaca, Mexico, wines from the local Jowler Creek Winery will be for sale for $25 a bottle. The selection includes several varieties: red and white, sweet and dry. The artworks reproduced on the labels also will be on display and available for purchase. The Kansas City event is sponsored by the Culture Xplorers Foundation in partnership with the (no name) Art Group of Philadelphia. It was initiated by Jim Kane, founder of the Kansas City-based Culture Xplorers travel company.?The company was founded on three pillars,? Kane said, ?people, traditions and impact ? getting to know the people in the local communities when you travel, participating in and experiencing their rich traditions and making a positive impact through travel.?The foundation came out of that philosophy,? he added. ?It?s a nonprofit which manages and creates positive impact partnerships, projects and programs.? One of its most successful programs to date is an annual weavers awards celebration of indigenous textile artists at the Center of Traditional Textiles of Cusco in Peru. Next year, Culture Xplorers will celebrate its 10th anniversary and will mark the event in March by endowing a scholarship for a young Oaxacan artist.?It?s considered the city of painters,? Kane said. ?It?s a hub of Mexican cultural and culinary traditions and art. It?s also Mexico?s second poorest state, so we felt we really wanted to give back.?Proceeds from the wine sales as well as sales of $5 magnets with the wine label artworks will go toward the Culture Xplorers artist endowment; sales of the artwork will be split between Mattie Rhodes and the artists, Kane said.Roughly 32 artists from Kansas City and Oaxaca have contributed works on the theme ?Inspiration: The Love of Place.? For Kane, cross-cultural collaboration was central to the project. ?We started from scratch,? he said. ?We reached out to the Art Institute and the Kansas City Artists Coalition, and Mattie Rhodes sent out a call for artists.?He envisions making The Art of Giving an annual event in Kansas City and bringing new artists into the mix each year. The Mattie Rhodes exhibit of wine label artworks will be followed by a digital presentation of the works in conjunction with next year?s scholarship event in Oaxaca. Friday night, don?t miss Mattie Rhodes? ?Small Apparitions? side gallery show of artworks devoted to the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico?s most ubiquitous religious icon. And if you buy a case of wine at The Art of Giving, you?ll be invited to an Oaxacan mole and mescal fiesta in January at Kane?s Brookside home.
