WEDNESDAY, Jan. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Exposure to chemicals at work causes many cases of asthma, especially for plumbers, spray painters and hair stylists, a new study finds.
Researchers in Sweden found many workers are exposed to toxic substances while doing their jobs despite public warnings that they use protective equipment.
The international study involved more than 13,000 adults in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Estonia. Cases of asthma -- one of the most common adult diseases -- were tracked from 1980 to 2000. The total incidence of new cases was 1.3 asthma per 1,000 men, and 2.4 per 1,000 women, the study showed.
Seven percent of the asthma cases among women and up to 14 percent among men were linked to the workplace, the researchers recently reported online in the Annals of Occupational Hygiene.
"To be able to work proactively, it is essential to show which substances at work increase the risk of asthma and which occupations are high-risk," Linnea Lillienberg, a researcher at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, said in a university news release.
The study revealed the following workers are at greater risk for asthma because of toxic-chemical exposure on the job:
spray painters exposed to compounds called diisocyanates in paint
plumbers who handle adhesives and foam insulation
cleaners who come into contact with detergents
health care and social services personnel who use latex gloves and are exposed to detergents
food and tobacco industry workers exposed to certain proteins
hair stylists who handle chemicals in bleach
nail beauticians who use fast-acting glue
"Some people are more susceptible than others," added Lillienberg. "For example, people with hay fever have asthma more often if they're exposed to proteins from plants and animals. But if we look at individuals with no increased susceptibility, the risk was greater among those who were exposed to epoxy and diisocyanates, which are found in glue, varnish and foam plastic. Among women without hay fever, the risk was particularly elevated among those who handled detergents."

Glen Coben, who created the Niketown look and feel, was tapped to design the CYC experience.

During Christmas of 2011, Stephen Nitkin had a revelation when trying to book a fitness class.
?My buddies and I couldn?t get spots in any of our regular classes because the college kids were home on break and filling them up,? recalls the former owner of Marquis Jets (which he went on to sell to NetJets).
Fueled by this realization that college students craved city-quality boutique fitness, Nitkin went from selling $150,000 airplane rides to $18 rides on a spin bike. In 2012, he opened CYC Fitness studios in Madison, Wisconsin, and Austin, Texas, and at least four more are slated to open in 2013. The workout, created by Keoni Hudoba, has the party-vibe of SoulCycle and the athletic spirit of Flywheel.
CYC is the first boutique fitness experience created for the college market. Until now, staying fit in college usually meant either playing varsity or slinging sweat in a big, impersonal gym. So it?s a stroke of business genius, coupled with a karmic good deed, to bring fitness to a demographic more preoccupied with keggers and all-nighters. Imagine ?Animal House? with a spin studio.
?I lived in a studio all summer creating this workout,? says Hudoba, the New York trainer who also created the super popular workout Drenched.
Nitkin enlisted group fitness dynamo Keoni Hudoba to create a unique spin workout for CYC. ?Keoni is a tremendous success story in terms of his own personal weight loss, and he has an amazing personality,? says Nitkin.
THE WORKOUT
Instructors go by the title Cycologists and they?ll lead riders through a 45-minute class that torches up to 800 calories (or about 5 Coronas). ?Almost every song is weighted,? says Hudoba, who has an equity stake in the company and selects and trains all the instructors. You?ll hold weights for 70 percent of the class?and not the teeny tiny ones. ?What frat bro is going to want to do a bicep curl with a two-pound weight?? jokes Hudoba.
Moves from other sports like rowing, volleyball, and boxing are incorporated for a more sports-specific vibe. Oh, and did we mention the drum set where favored riders get to pound out the beat?
SHARING THE RIDE
CYC also plans to distinguish itself through its philanthropy and its social media approach. For every mile pedaled, a penny goes to CYC?s partner charities. And riders are encouraged to get involved with those charities off the bike, too.
Everything you do at CYC can be transmitted to your friends via social media. You can book your bike using Facebook, post your results, and invite your friends to ride with you. ?We?re changing the paradigm in the fitness industry,? says Nitkin about the company?s ride-and-share ethos. And by putting college-age riders on spin bikes, it may also be changing the face of fitness. ?Alexia Brue
Cyc Fitness is currently in Madison, WI, $16.50?$19.50 per ride, and Austin, TX, $18?$21.50,? www.cycfitness.com

Philips has decided that there just isn't any money in home entertainment, and as such is flogging off the remainder of its interests to Funai for $201 million. It had already sold its North American TV and DVD operations to the Japanese company back in 2008, but will now package off its whole Lifestyle Entertainment division, which includes global disc players and its Fidelio high-end audio outfit. Instead, Philips will concentrate on profitable sectors such as lighting and healthcare -- so the sooner it can develop a bulb that can kill the sniffles, the better.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands - Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) today announced that it has signed an agreement regarding the transfer of its Lifestyle Entertainment business (Audio, Video, Multimedia and Accessories) to Funai Electric Co., Ltd (TSE/OSE 6839). Under the terms, Funai will pay a cash consideration of EUR 150 million and a brand license fee, relating to a license agreement for an initial period of five and a half years, with an optional renewal of five years. The deal for the Audio, Multimedia and Accessories businesses is expected to close in the second half of 2013. The Video business will transfer in 2017, related to existing intellectual property licensing arrangements. The gain on the transaction will be recorded at the closing date.
The transaction is subject to customary conditions, including regulatory filings and works council procedures. The Remote Control activities, which are predominantly business-to-business, are excluded.
"With this transaction we are taking another step in reshaping the Consumer Lifestyle portfolio and transforming Philips into the leading technology company in Health and Well-being," said Philips Chief Executive Officer Frans van Houten. "I am confident that today's agreement with Funai, our partner for over 25 years, will create a promising future for Philips Audio, Video and Entertainment, and continuity for our customers. It will leverage Philips' strong brand, strength in innovation, and leadership position in these businesses, with Funai's strong presence in North and Central America - and Japan, and its supply and manufacturing expertise."
"This is truly an exciting time for us at Funai," said Funai President and CEO, Tomonori Hayashi. "This transaction will allow us to continue moving forward and grow as a global company. We will benefit from Philips' legendary know-how and innovation, as well as the excellent talent they have in place around the world, allowing us to work as a team to leverage and grow the Philips brand in Audio, Video and Entertainment. Additionally, this will give Funai the opportunity to meet our goal of expanding our business into markets including Brazil, Russia, India and China."
"With this agreement and the joint venture for Philips Television, the Consumer Lifestyle sector will further focus on Health and Well-being. The portfolio, consisting of Personal Care, Health & Wellness, Domestic Appliances and Coffee, delivered high single-digit growth in 2012," said Philips Consumer Lifestyle Chief Executive Officer Pieter Nota. "Philips has a proud heritage in Audio, Video, Multimedia and Accessories, and today's agreement with Funai ensures that this business can continue to deliver great Philips-branded innovations to consumers around the world."
Philips Audio, Video, Multimedia and Accessories make up the Lifestyle Entertainment business group within Philips Consumer Lifestyle. This business group is headquartered in Hong Kong and employs approximately 2,000 people worldwide.
Today's agreement does not impact any of Funai's existing brand licensing agreements with Philips.
NASA launched a new communication satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Wednesday evening. This satellite is one of three expected to reach space between now and 2015, upgrading the agency's communication network.?

A next-generation NASA relay satellite was launched into orbit Wednesday (Jan. 30) on a mission to upgrade a vital communications network linking the space agency to its spacecraft orbiting the Earth.

The U.S. space agency's first launch of 2013, the new?Tracking and Data Relay Satellite K?(TDRS-K for short) soared spaceward atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 8:48 p.m. EST (0148 Jan. 31 GMT).
"We have a customer that's quite thrilled right now to have a healthy satellite on orbit," Tim Dunn the TDRS-K flight director said in a NASA TV interview after the launch.
The TDRS-K satellite is bound for an orbit 22,300 miles (35,888 kilometers) above Earth, where it will join a constellation of five other satellites currently in orbit to help NASA and other space agencies stay in touch with orbiting spacecraft.
NASA's TDRS communications network began in 1983 and has not received an upgrade since 2002, when the space agency launched its 10th TDRS satellite. Five satellites are currently in use today, with the TDRS-K launch adding one more that number, mission managers said. [Launch Photos: NASA's TDRS-K Satellite Blasts Off]
The TDRS-K satellite is expected to spend at least 15 years, but agency officials expect that the satellite will exceed its projected life-expectancy. Many of the network's satellites have?outlived their expected mission lifetimes, ?said Jeffrey Gramling, NASA's TDRS project manager.
But that does not mean that TDRS-K is unnecessary. One of the satellites currently in active service is slated be retired in the next few months, and other satellites in the aging network are getting older, said Badri Younes, a scientist in NASA's Space Communications and Navigation office.
The satellite launched today was the first of three new satellites expected to enter service between now and 2015 that should further bolster the network. The TDRS-K mission costs between $350 million and $400 million, not including the price of its rocket.
The TDRS-K satellite is 26 feet long (8 meters) and weighs about 7,615 pounds (3,454 kilograms). It was expected to separate from its Atlas 5 rocket one hour and 46 minutes after liftoff, with a Centaur upper stage rocket engine slated to carry it the rest of the way to its geosynchronous orbit.
The satellite is expected to deploy its solar arrays and giant antennas about 11 days after launch, according to a mission description. ?
NASA's TDRS satellite network?is part of the larger "Space Network" used keep space agencies on the ground in constant communication with orbiting spacecraft. The International Space Station sends all of its data and messages through the network using the TDRS satellites. The rocket that sent TDRS-K into orbit even uses the space network to beam down data, Vernon Thorp, a program manager with NASA said.
TDRS-K is now entering into a three month period of testing and calibrations, but once those tests are complete the NASA research team will decide if the satellite is ready for service.?

A lot of jobs in the music industry are self-explanatory?and most people think they know about every single opportunity within the business. However, their may be some jobs that are extremely important that many people never know they existed. One career that many people may not be familiar with is talent buying. Talent buyers work for concert halls, bars, and clubs and buy artists and book them for venues.
In order to become a talent buyer you need to have three extremely important personality traits. First, a talent buyer should be a high achiever. This is because they need to have a drive to book artists that they think the venue would not otherwise be able to get. Second, talent buyers need to be organized because of all of the schedules and events that they are putting together for the venue. It would be a disaster to accidentally book two artists on the same day. Third, they need to have great communication skills and be able to represent the venue they work for in the best light.

The road to becoming a successful talent buyer could potentially be a long one. Most people in this career field major in Arts, Entertainment, or Media Management. The average salary for a talent buyer is roughly 63,000 dollars, however, because talent buyers tend to earn about 10 percent of the estimated talent budget, the salary definitely changes from time to time. In an interview for absolutepunk.net, Matt Dunn, a successful talent buyer/promoter states ??Sure, it SUCKS to lose money and all, but EVERY show has happy kids stoked to see their favorite bands, so it brings back the rewarding side of it all? (Giaramita 1).
Every job has its ups and downs and a talent buyer is not exception. One of many exciting tasks that talent buyers jobs is actually booking the artists, especially since the concert would have never happened without them in the first place. Matt Dunn states ?Just imagine if YOU booked a Fall Out Boy show at the Ritacco, thousands of kids STOKED on life to see these bands, bands STOKED on life to play for this many kids, and it all happened because YOU answered the phone and YOU did the work to make it swing? (Giaramita 1). The down of the job is the inconsistency of??the salary. Just like in any business, markets and tastes of the public are always changing, and because the job depends on peoples? preferences, it is important for the talent buyer to see these changes in order to make money.
Overall, becoming a talent buyer is a great way to stay involved in the music industry without being an artist. Being the person who puts the entire event together and sees the customers and artist enjoy themselves is a very rewarding job, and I am thankful for anyone that does it.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A former social activist convicted of defrauding a California charity backed by celebrities Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison.
Hari Dillon was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in San Francisco after being convicted last year of embezzling from the Vanguard Public Foundation and defrauding its donors.
Vanguard collapsed in 2011 after losing millions of dollars in two separate scams.
Dillon could have faced more than eight years behind bars, but U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer ordered the lighter sentence because Dillon helped investigators uncover an even bigger scam operated by Samual "Mouli" Cohen.
Cohen was sentenced in April to 22 years in prison for operating a $30 million Ponzi scheme that victimized the foundation.
Authorities say Dillon siphoned $2.5 million from the foundation at the same time Cohen was operating his fraud.

Corbeil had been working on the music for the forthcoming game/interactive movie "Beyond: Two Souls" starring Ellen Page. His son, Laurent Corbeil, announced the news on a cancer discussion forum, writing: "My father, Normand Corbeil, 56, passed away today at 2:56 PM. He was a great composer and an amazing dad ... I am in shock."

Want to write for Lifehacker? We're on the hunt for a new contributing editor to manage our Saturday and Sunday tips and tricks. Interested? Here's what you need to know.
The weekend contributing editor should be able to work a full day on Saturday and Sunday, and should be self-sufficient, because you're going to be working by yourself a lot of the time. Also, these are important qualities to have:
The ability to check into email and chat on the weekdays. Although we're not going to be asking you to write on the weekdays or be available all day, we will often assign you items, send you notes, and want to communicate a bit during the week.
An excellent understanding of Lifehacker. You should be a reader, at least, but also know exactly what it is that makes us tick. It's kind of an intangible quality, knowing what kind of posts we write (and which ones we don't), but it's a vital one.
Prior writing experience. You don't need to have years and years of experience, but the experience of having written professionally is a big plus.
The ability to write quickly and coherently.
Willingness to take direction.
Being a weekend Lifehacker contributor editor is actually a pretty decent start to being a full-time and salaried weekday Lifehacker writer. We've hired weekend people in the past, so keep that in mind as you're applying. And, even if you don't get the weekend job, applying can still give you the opportunity to fill in for writers when they go on vacation, or other small freelance opportunities at the site.
Send all email applications to wannabeweekend@lifehacker.com with the subject Lifehacker Weekend Contributing Editor.
Include prior writing experience and links to them.
In the email, a few sentences about yourself. Good things to discuss are why you want to be a weekend writer, your interests and experience that fit with Lifehacker (programming/writing/hacking/DIY experience), and your availability (when you can start). Focus on the fact that being concise is much more effective, but write as much as you need to to tell us what experience you have and what special circumstances allow you to be a great Lifehacker weekend writer.

We get a lot of emails, so unfortunately we can't reply to everyone. If we do contact you, it may not be immediately so please be patient. If you don't hear from us, feel free to give it another shot in the future.
